Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
