European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
