In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of major explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, without initially offer additional information.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Developments
The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Key events preceding this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
