Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
